Abstract

Introduction: One could be said suffers from hypertension if he or she has systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg, in repeating examination. Hypertension degree could increase and lead to complication. Therefore, hypertension patients should organize their own behavior. Health coaching with health belief model is one way for the nurse to improve motivation and patient’s beliefs concerning his/her disease so that they would show good compliance behavior. Objective of this study was to analyze the effect of health coaching with HBM approach toward compliance behavior and blood pressure. Methods: This study used quasi experiment design with pre-post test control group design. Sample collection technique was by purposive sampling. The amount of sample is 16 person per group. Study variables includes: compliance behavior (diet arrangement and physical activities) and blood pressure. Statistical data test used are Mann Whitney and Sign Rank Test Wilcoxon. Result and analysis: (1) Health coaching with HBM approach has effect toward compliance behavior individually but it was not apparent in groups. Difference test in treatment group using Wilcoxon obtain p value 0,002, while difference test with Mann Whitney obtain p value 1,000. (2) Health coaching with HBM approach has effect toward blood pressure with result from difference test using Mann Whitney obtain p value 0,006. Discussion and conclusion: (1) Health coaching with HBM approach showed no significant difference in compliance behavior of treatment and control group, (2) There is blood pressure differential between treatment and control group. It is expected hypertension patients should be conscious of his/her disease, nurse to be more active in giving health information and evaluating the existence of hypertension degree escalation. Keywords: health coaching, health belief model, hypertension, compliance behavior
