Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type 2 is Diabetes that occurs due to insulin resistance as a result from progressive secretory defect of the pancreatic β-cell. Lack of health education and adequate information about dietary management of DM can cause adherence problem and increase risk of complication. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of health education through booklet media on knowledge, intention and dietary adherence of DM type 2. This study was using pre-experimental research design (One-group pre-post test design). The population was people with DM type 2 in Puskesmas Lidah Kulon Surabaya. Total sample was 11 respondents, taken according to non-probability sampling. The independent variable was health education through booklet media. The dependent variables were knowledge, intention and dietary adherence. Data were collected using questionare and observation sheet. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test with significant value α≤0.05. Result showed that health education through booklet media has effect on people with DM type 2 knowledge (p=0.02), intention (p=0.005) and dietary adherence (p=0.008). In conclucion, health education through booklet media can improve knowledge, intention and dietary adherence of people with DM type 2. Further studies should compare the effect of health education through booklet media and other educational media using control group.
